Upcoming ACG events in Sabah 2018

New year means another cycle of exciting events to look forward to, some new events are making their debut this year and that what makes this list even sweeter. Looking for ACG (Anime, Comic & Games) + Hobby related events to go in Sabah this year? Well look no further, below here is a list of upcoming events to guide you throughout year 2018.
1. Cosplay Competition 2018 @ Labuan
Date: 24 – 25 February 2018, 10AM – 5PM
Venue: Ujana Kewangan, W.P Labuan
Something happening at our neigbouring island, Labuan! Would love to include this because its first of its kind to be held in the Pearl of Borneo. Its part of a big event that ranged from photography, painting workshops and exhibitions.
2. Dragon Ball Fighter Z Mini Budokai 2018
Date & Time: 24 February 2018, 12PM – 3PM
Venue: Tiny Robot Retail Store, 3rd Floor, Suria Sabah Shopping Mall.

Dragon Ball Fighter Z Mini Budokai 2018 is a collaboration event between TinyRobot & Kinabalu Button Mashers. Dragon Ball Fighter Z is a recently released game that gained popularity among DBZ fans, I really love its super intense fighting scenes that look similar to the original anime.
Participation is free of charge, however, only 32 slots available & are given to those first come first serve basis. While all participants will receive a complimentary keychain, prizes for the winners includes:

Fate series fans in Sabah was bummed when local cinema didn’t place a screening date for this movie some time ago. Now, GM Hobby Garage KK, with the support of Spring’s Subculture, Sabahan Anime Club group and City Cineplex brings you this movie for one night only! Check out the link above to participate the event.
4. Spring’s Subculture 2018: The Beginning
Date: 24 – 25 March 2018
Venue: Foochow Association Hall, Jalan Kolam, Bukit Padang, Kota Kinabalu.

For the longest time we haven’t got any major ACG events that started out in the early quarter of the year, and Spring’s Subculture has now filled the gap. Making its debut this year, this event aims to bring people together from a wide range of hobbies and pop culture.
Various performances, competition and site event will be held during event day, as well as various merchandise and arts booth. Special guests for the event will be Misa Chiang, Chihiro-千尋 and 周荀/DenKa. Be sure to check out the Facebook/event page link for the latest updates.
5. Cosplay Competition @ Hanami Matsuri, Suria Sabah
Date & Time: 31 March 2018, 1PM – 4PM
Venue: Ground Floor, Suria Sabah Shopping Mall

In conjunction with Hanami Matsuri event in Suria Sabah, a cosplay competition is held and its open to everyone! There are a total of 15 prizes to be won, that includes Best Costume, Best Performance & Best Cosplay. Do check out the link above for more info and to register yourself.
6. Sabah Open Yoyo Championship 2018

Organized by Team RevYo (Revolution Yoer), Sabah Open Yoyo Championship (SOYC) is a professional yoyo competition organized in Sabah. The competition is now open for entry, so please do check the Facebook page for more details.
6. Grand Merdeka Battlegrounds – eSports Festival 2018

8. Show Me Your Skills: FIFA & PES 2018 PS4 Tournament

STAMAX Stands for Sandakan Toys Anime Model kits Action figures eXpo, as you might have guessed it, will be happening in Sandakan. The event is founded by Jackie Liew and Jack Chong, both Hobby/Toys Enthusiast and Collectors who wishes to unite the local collectors alike for a major gathering event. Event will be consisting of hobby exhibitions, parent & child gunpla building live, cosplay performances, Q&A sessions and lucky draw. Check out their Facebook pages for the latest info.
12. HobbyCon 12 2018
Date: 8th – 9th December 2018
Venue: Exhibition Hall, 1st Floor, ITCC Penampang

The date, as well as new designs for the mascots (by Rei Daiki) has been revealed today (20th April), New venue (yes,a new one!) will be announced in the future. The recent announcement revealed a new venue for HobbyCon, which is ITCC Penampang 1st Floor Exhibition Hall. Also joining Knitemaya as the guest cosplayer for Hobbycon 2018, Yuegene Fay!

As per last year listing, I also include events that are not entirely ACG (Anime Comic & Games) event, but lies in the line of hobby and popular culture events, for example Star Wars, KanColle, Touken Ranbu, Yo-Yo, Plastic Modelling (Plamo), Board Games. I believe these kind of events should be given more exposure, one of it would be this event listing. 😉
